Derby Ghosts and Paranormal

WARNING: Viewing this site may cause nightmares!!!
The City of Derby has been important for almost 2,000 years, especially because of its location.
It lies at the lowest crossing point of the River Trent where the high ground of the Peak District meets the lower ground at the start of the Midlands Plain. As such, over the centuries,
many people have passed through the town on the way to somewhere else and some stayed!

Derby also has quite a crime history. It was the place where the last hanging,
drawing and quartering took place and the last rebellion against the Crown in England.
There were also at one time, five prisons.Derby was also the location of the last pressing to death
in 1665 and where Lawrence Shirley, the only peer of the realm to be hanged for murder,
was executed using the 'new drop' instead of the old system of standing on a cart
with a noose around the neck.
In addition, the very first performance of Hamilton Deane's stage adaptation of Bram Stoker's Count Dracula was performed at the Grand Theatre, Derby in 1924!

It has been said that where a particularly traumatic death takes place,
energy is transferred from the person and absorbed into the material of the building.
Then, for some reason, sometimes these events are replayed in the future.
There is also the theory that a sudden end to your life is not only the end of all your hopes for the future
but it also denies a person of the chance to say their goodbyes. Many people believe that those who have met their end in this way, come back as ghosts because they did not have time to tie up all their loose ends on earth. Therefore, probably as a result of its history,

Derby is one of the spookiest towns in the country
with haunted churches, inns, hospitals, shops and offices.

Beware Ghostly Places

Executions in Derbyshire
1556 August 1
Joan Waste was burnt as a heretic inWindmill Pit, on the Burton Road, at Derby.
(She was a blind woman, who, during the reign of Edward VI,
had attended the services of the Church.
After Queen Mary came to the throne she was accused before the
Bishop of the Diocese of maintaining that the Sacrament was
only a memorial or representation of the body of Christ,
and the elements were mere bread and wine.
This opinion she was required to renounce; but, persisting in it,
she received sentence of condemnation.
After a sermon in the church she was led to the stake on the Burton Road,
and there burned,
holding Roger Waste, her brother, by the hand,
praying and desiring those around her to pray.

Many of the older ghost stories are linked to historical events, and have been developed by word of mouth, changing through the centuries as the tales have been passed down. But even in the more sceptical times of the 21st century some of these stories have been backed by credible witness accounts. When members of the public have seen something quite out of the ordinary for which no logical explanation can be provided. There are in fact thousands of modern cases on record, far too many to be easily dismissed as resulting from hallucination and misinterpretation.
Derby Ghosts
Room 29 at the Bell Inn, Sadler Gate, which used to be a hotel, is said to be haunted by young servant girl murdered by the Jacobite army in 1745.

At the Dolphin Inn, Queen Street, the gas taps in the cellar are mysteriously, turned off making the staff think the barrels are empty.

Some of Derby's better known ghosts include, the ghost of Joseph Moss, the only policeman ever to have been murdered in the city, who was shot in 1879. His ghost is said to haunt the fish market, which used to be the police station. A tombstone in the memory of Joseph Moss is on display at the rear of Derby Gaol.

In 1588, three catholic priests were hung drawn and quartered on St Mary's Bridge near to the Bridge Chapel. The anguished cries of the men are said to be heard echoing across the river on the 24 July, the anniversary of this infamous event in the history of Derby.

Amongst many other ghostly happening in Derby, beer mats and ashtrays have been said to go flying off tables at the Abbey Pub, in Darley Abbey.

Falstaff Public House. This pub claims to be haunted by four separate ghosts; a young boy, an ex-landlord, an Irish prize-winning bare knuckle fighter and a sergeant-major. IN addition to these spooks being seen, items are moved and hidden, electrical appliances are switched on and off.

The Ostrich Pub dates back to the Middle Ages and was run by a nasty, mean innkeeper by the name of Jarmen. It is said that he created a contraption that could tilt rich individuals out of their beds to send them through a trapdoor leading to a pot of boiling oil. How gruesome! The most haunted room on the premises is said to be the pantry, where many tormented spirits gather. The bodies of the rich were disposed in the pantry after he robbed them of all their money. A strange presence can also be encountered when entering the master bedroom.

1665 March 14
Woman pressed to death in the County of Derby, as a mute.
(This awful punishment was pronounced on those who refused to plead and remained mute.
Before the inflection of the sentence the accused was warned three times of the penalty which would attend obstinate silence, and allowed a short time for consideration.
If the prisoner still persisted in silence, the Judgement of Penance, as it was termed, was thus pronounced: "That you be taken back to the prison whence you came to a low dungeon into which no light can enter; that you be laid on your back on the bare floor, with a cloth round your loins, but elsewhere naked; that there be set on your body a weight of iron, as great as you can bear - and greater; that you have no sustenance save, on the first day three morsels of the coarsest bread, on the second day three draughts of stagnant water from the pool nearest the prison door, on the third day again three morsels of bread as before, and such bread and such water alternately from day to day until you die".
This is the last known instance of this awful penalty being carried into effect
